T he office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has asked five Pacific Island countries to submit their country reports to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.

OHCHR Pacific Office Chief, Paulo David says the Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Tonga and Tuvalu are yet to submit their reports, which is long overdue.

"I wish to encourage the five remaining governments of the Pacific region which have never reported to the UN committee to do their utmost to fulfil their reporting obligation under the Convention on the Rights of the Child," Mr David said.

PACNEWS understands that Nauru was to have submitted its report in 1996, Tuvalu and Tonga in 1997, Niue in 1998 and the Cook Islands in 1999.

Mr David said once these five remaining countries of the Pacific submit their reports the UN Committee will review them and provide were necessary advice for positive change in all fields of children's rights.

He also thanked the governments of the Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Samoa for their recently submitted reports, which the UN Committee will review next year in Geneva.PNS (ENDS)
